One of the big problems with fad diets is that they usually work, and often do it quickly, so people are likely to resort to them whenever they want a quick fix. If you wonder what exactly a fad diet is, simply take a quick look at the proposed meal.
If it’s too low in calories, extremely restrictive or voided of a specific food group, chances are the diet is one of the “quick fixes” currently in vogue. While they may offer instant satisfaction, fad diets do come with a series of contraindications:
Problem #1: The weight loss is not permanent
Any diet that severely restricts the number of calories you can eat will result in rapid weight loss. The problem? This weight is usually just water, although in longer diets it can be due to muscle loss.
Fat doesn’t respond well to famine, so severely restricting the number of calories you consume will actually result in your body trying to conserve as much fat as possible to ensure survival.
Restrictive diets are also difficult to maintain in the long run, so you’re likely to return to your normal eating habits, at which time the weight will probably come back.
Problem #2: They’re boring
Sticking to a fad diet can be very difficult because of its restrictions. Most of us are used to food that has been cooked and flavored in the process, so consuming only fat-free or carbohydrate-free foods can leave you craving your old meals. This makes the diets hard to stick to but also leaves you more prone to overeating as soon as you stop the dieting process.
Problem #3: They’re bad for you
Except for a few examples, most fad diets are not nutritiously balanced. They either lack enough fiber or a series of vitamins and minerals present in the food group you’re supposed to be avoiding.
Certain diets, such as those high in protein, may be potentially dangerous if you have heart disease or other health problems. Yo-yo dieting, which fad diets seem to encourage, will also make your body more resistant to fat burning, so it will become harder and harder to lose the same amount of pounds.
Problem #4: They don’t teach you anything
The truth is that the best way to lose weight and be healthy is to change the way you eat permanently. Not only is that the best way to become slimmer without having to diet all the time, but is also less time consuming, better for your body and your health.
People who learn to eat correctly can usually eat anything they want as long as it is in moderate proportions, so they never feel deprived and they’re less likely to overeat as an indulgence.
Even when effective in the short term, fad diets are never the best solution and are not intended to help you sustain weight loss. The next time you’re tempted by the infomercials promising a new miracle weight loss secret, turn the TV off and head to the gym for a good workout, followed by a good, balanced meal.
