Supplementally, there may some medical conditions that will prevent a good outcome for some patients. It is important to discuss these issues with your health care provider before having surgery.

Gastric Banding Procedure

You can get help if you have been diagnosed as morbidly obese. One of your options is known as weight loss surgery. This is becoming a widespread surgery for those fighting with weight loss.

Included under weight loss surgery are several options for what type of surgery to have. Among these is one known as gastric banding. This specific operation will offer you a way to success with weight loss.

Gastric banding is a form of gastric bypass surgery, but, it doesn’t use staples to make the stomach smaller. Instead, it will use a band that separates the upper part of the stomach to the lower part of the stomach. This causes the stomach to lose its ability to hold much food. As a result, one will not feel hungry as often and will control how much food stays in the body.

The Banding Difference

The differentiation between gastric banding and the other types of weight loss surgery is that there will be a small opening between the upper and lower stomach areas. This will allow for the excess amount of food to move into the lower stomach and quickly digest and remove what is not needed. The opening between the upper and lower stomach will be adjusted according to one’s height and ideal weight as well as the needs for nutrition.

Lap Band Gastric Banding

Lap Band gastric banding weight loss surgery is frequently the preferred surgery for obesity issues. It offers numerous advantages including more steady weight loss, less healing time, less pain after the surgery and patients are able to resume normal activities more quickly.

By and large there are three types of weight loss surgery ; the Lap-Band gastric banding is the newest and least invasive of the three. Prior to performing this surgery, a doctor will cautiously assess your case, looking into your health history, body weight and body mass index and your willingness to take control of your life.

Expectations

After it has been determined that you are a good candidate for this type of weight loss surgery, your doctor will carefully go over the surgery guidelines and expectations. Those who have the Lap-Band weight loss surgery have to develop a dedication to change not only their food intake, but also must be willing to undergo behavior modification and an exercise regimen.

The doctor will also explain how the Lap-Band surgery is performed and what you should expect when recovering from this surgery. The doctor will also discuss with you other specialists you will need to see including a dietitian, a therapist, a psychologist and other medical specialist.

Liposuction Techniques

The basic liposuction technique involves small incisions being made on the affected area and a narrow tube or cannula, which is attached to a vacuum that sucks the fat that lies deep beneath the skin. This basic technique is used in all patients but there are several variations available.

Tumescent Technique

A technique known as the ‘Tumescent Technique’ involves the surgeon injecting large amounts of fluid, up to three times the amount of fat removed. The tumescent liposuction technique is typically performed on those patients who need a local anaesthetic, although the procedure usually takes longer (sometimes 4-5 hours) than the traditional liposuction. The fluid contains sufficient anaesthetic so additional anaesthesia is not always needed.

Super-wet Technique

Another technique parallel to the tumescent technique is the ‘Super-wet Technique.’ The differentiation being that lesser amounts of fluids are used. This technique calls for the amount of fluid be equal to the amount of fat to be removed. Intravenous sedation is often required for this technique and sometimes a patient may need a general anaesthetic. This method usually takes one to two hours.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure that assists in enhancing the body’s shape by eliminating unwanted and surplus fat from certain areas such as the chin, abdomen, hips, thighs etc.

Although liposuction is not a substitute for either exercise or an improvement in diet, it will help in removing any stubborn areas of fat which don't respond to more conventional weight loss methods.

Liposuction Candidate?

To be a good candidate for liposuction, you should have down-to-earth expectations about what liposuction can do for you. Unfortunately many people presuppose that having liposuction will improve their whole life, while in fact the excess fat you are carrying may only be part of any problems you may have.

Even though liposuction has the ability to improve your appearance and thus your self confidence, you should be aware that it will not necessarily alter either your looks to that of your ideal or modify the way other people treat you.

Prior to making your decision about surgery, you should think very carefully about what you are expecting and talk about it with your surgeon. If you do have any unrealistic expectations, he will be able to explain to you the realities of what is involved.
